Let’s Celebrate

Well it is official. Autumn is here. The crunching leaves, that crisp chill in the air, the colours, and all those cozy vibes! For me each element of fall brings its own glitter culminating into this amazing energy of this time of year. Although each season has its own beauty there is something about fall. When you talk to another person about fall vibes it is a conversation where there is no other interpretation. We each know fall so well due to the imprints in our memories that we can jive freely with one another celebrating our favourite moments and things. Autumn is that time of year where the definition is a celebrated consensus. This or that we all find out like minded people. Pumpkin spice? Leaf pile jumper? Morning jogger? Harvest flavours? Apple pie? The best part about these conversations is we are just so happy for the other person to have that special thing they love.

If fall were to have a soundtrack it would be all the various ways we hear the leaves crunching. We listen to them crunch beneath our feet, we listen to the crunchy tinkle as they fall from the trees, and we listen to the rustling as leaves blow along the ground (or within branches not quite ready to let them go.) The music is in the background of the videos we take of the kids running in the park. The sound is music to our ears when we get to walk and kick the leaves along the sidewalk. Would any of our memories of fall be the same without that beautiful sound? Would any of our upcoming falls (or especially this one) be quite the same without it? Just imagine all your favourite moments of the season with the sound of leaves muted.

Autumn has a unique sensation that can be found in that crisp chill in the air. That chill almost has a smell all its own. Like a neurological smell. The smell is a reminder that the cold is coming. It is cold in the morning and evenings but sweetly warm during the day. It is the smell of sweater weather and freshly washed warm blankets pulled from the closets. It is the trace of decaying of things that have reached the end of their season. It is the sense that we are smaller than the big scheme of things as the season proves once again that we cannot make summer stay a day longer. The chill of the air tingles on our skin reminding us that we are truly alive. The crispness isn’t limited to just the incoming cold but also the tart of an apple in apple pie or the sharp bite of apple cider or the soothing of a hot tea after spending time outdoors. The crispness finds its way beneath our skin in any form.

If we want to see nature in an unscripted unplanned peak of beauty we only need to look as far as fall. In the entire season of autumn it is like the land dressing up for an evening out. There is a joy to be found in witnessing the trees and bushes burst with colour. The last hurrah of the year before the humans are in charge of decorating the world around them. Neighbourhoods and gardens we know so well achieve a beauty. We have the privilege of discovering new shades, hues, and colours as each day goes on. On a bad day we can go hunting for new discoveries to distract ourselves. On other days we can use their colour to remind us that the world is beautiful. Colour fills our grocery store as pumpkins and squash take center stage tempting us with fabulous ideas for their future purposes (whether or not we are ever the person planning to do them.)

The cozy vibes bring all our memories and delight of fall together. They are the things we cherish and celebrate about the season. Cozy up with a good book or with the family to watch their favourite movies. Sweaters and all the other cozy clothing (like the reading socks.) The flavours and tastes of all our favourite memories and treats come together as a cozy vibe for our taste buds. The smells that fill our noses are mostly of the flavours we love so well cooking, baking, or brewing. Just their smell brings a comfort and coziness that we always cherish. So much so, that we buy candles that carry the promise of those scents. (Even if they aren’t as good as the real thing.)

Fall is one of those seasons where there isn’t really a whole lot of people that truly hate it. Think about it. Summer or winter always has those steadfast people on either side of either loving them or hating them. But fall doesn’t have that kind of stigma attached. Usually every person has that one thing that they look forward to every fall. Every person has those little things that make their fall special for them. We smile and laugh with the people who love everything pumpkin while we could be counting down the days to jump in that huge leaf pile in the front yard. Autumn brings us all together in a common bond of our favourite things. Fall is truly beautiful because nature reminds us that change can be beautiful for us too.
