Thursday Murder Club #2

Book 14 of 2023

A Summary

The Thursday Murder Club is back for book two. The septuagenarians are back to completely trump all assumptions of just what they should or shouldn’t be. Instead of sitting around quietly knitting and doing puzzles this gang is up to solving murders and unearthing the past. This time the catalyst is Elizabeth and a mysterious letter that she receives from someone from the past who is dead. There are missing diamonds, dangerous mobsters, and secrets to be found. Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron all join the case with Elizabeth to once again rock everyone’s socks with surprise at just what they are capable of. Will they solve the case or will this be the time that our assumptions of the elderly come true? Will each be able to overcome the obstacles in their way? Will they surprise themselves? Spoiler: Of course they will succeed this group is quickly becoming a favourite in the detective genre.

Thoughts and Review

Elizabeth Best and her little gang do not disappoint. While laughing and guessing the gang each reveal more of themselves as the pages turn. It is so exciting to have a series where there is no guaranteed rhythm but rather twists and turns in assumptions and personality just like life. I highly recommend. May each of us have as much gumption as this bunch when we get old. This entire series is fantastic in the sense that the main characters are septuagenarians who deny us our assumptions of just who the elderly are. In this series they are painted as very real people with very real pasts which is a big change to how the elderly are usually portrayed in books or films. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron are great characters to get to know as (so far) each book of the series reveals just a little more of their past. I cannot wait to see just what the Thursday Murder Club is up to next!

Recommendation

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of murder mysteries and great detectives. Even Poirot would be delighted by the antics of the Thursday Murder Club. This was book two so I would suggest starting the series from the beginning so that each character is developing on time. (You will miss certain hidden details of their back stories if you miss the first book.) If you are also a fan of shaking up the status quo of our impressions of the world I would suggest this series as unlike usual the “old people,” of our society are clearly up to many more exciting things than sitting around knitting. It is so refreshing to have characters that are not the usual criteria we come to expect. You will not want to miss out on this series, so give it a try! Happy Reading!
