Summary

Here are found 101 essays that will give any reader moments to pause and think about the why and how they think. Through the author Brianna Wiest eloquent words she lays out the ugly truths of just how much our own thoughts are distorting what we see. Changing the way you think changes everything. Brianna shows you just how to start deconstructing the way you think and start thinking differently. It isn’t that the reader has to undertake a huge amount of work but rather ask and answer simple questions letting the mind go to work. Wondering, musings, questions, and uncomfortable answers are here within the pages for the reader to discover. This isn’t a piece of work merely riding on the author’s experiences but also the experiences of anyone who lives amongst us.

Thoughts and Review

I listened to the audiobook format of this book. The narrator Abby Craden was a good fit as her voice has that tone that could easily be a wondering background voice from your own mind. As she reads the author’s words she becomes that friendly voice that often asks, “but why,” and your mind readily answers. This book is one hundred and one moments to pause, listen, and observe yourself. It is not often that you can have such a candid moment to be genuinely with yourself so let these be just one hundred and one moments just for you.

This is a book that needs to be gone through in a reasonably slowed down pace. If you were to read at your regular pace important moments to pause would be missed as you would get the gist of the conversation but miss the details. The details is where I found the real discoveries were made. I would listen to a few chapters than lose myself in my thoughts with music as I thought about what I had read. This did take reading at a much slower pace that if you were going to undertake this book make sure you have the time allowing to do so; it would be a great book to have on your night stand or to listen in short stints. I think we or rather I take it for granted that thoughts are just there but whether consciously (or not) we do create them. This book will change the way you think. Instead of being just thoughts we accept on face value the reader comes into control with the knowledge that we do in fact create them ourselves. That is a powerful realization all on its own.

Recommendation

If you are looking for a book that you can read in bite sized chunks or a piece of work that can be gone through slowly this could be the book for you. It is a piece of work that is meant to simmer and percolate in the back of your mind long after you read it. If you are looking for a place to start in the self-discovery world addressing the thoughts that make up so much of our background noise is a good place to start. I think we get so wound up and so buried underneath everything that it is difficult to figure out where to start. This book would be a great place to start. Even as just what it is.. a moment to pause and just be in your own thoughts. There is always too much. Too much of laundry, things to do, and places to go. BUT there will always be more moments to choose to act than moments to be buried. Happy Reading!
