Book 22 of 2023

Summary

This is the fourth book of the China Bayles mystery series. China Bayles is the owner and operator of a herb shop, “Thyme and Seasons,” set in the Texan town of Pecan Springs. Her best friend Ruby Wilcox has the new age shop next door “The Crystal Cave.” In this instalment of the series the victim is China’s accountant. A seemingly private and reclusive person in town. But she is so much more than the impression she makes in town. As China attempts to navigate her new living arrangements with pizazz and failure she becomes embroiled in the case. With Pecan Springs charm and the host of characters that the reader has come to know with a few new additions this is sure to be time well spent. Will China discover who did Rosemary in? Or will she be brought down by a convicted killer out for revenge (that has broken out of prison who was put there by McQuaid) before she can solve the case?

Thoughts and Review

Like the previous books of the China Bayles series I found myself entertained and guessing. The characters were there to bring the humour along as the cast took off in search of clues in the mystery of just what happened to Rosemary. Although you have your suspicions of just who the killer may be or what may be the plot that is afoot it is an enjoyable ride nonetheless. Even if you do figure out the killer early the subplot with the family drama is entertaining and the unfolding of the story around the killer is fun to read. As always learning little tidbits about herbs and peaking the readers curiosity about them is always a treat to receive from the author. Rosemary as a character although flatter as a victim seems to fill up with imagined life as more details about her life are revealed through the investigation. All in all it was a fun read with each character adding to the story in their own signature way.

Recommendation

I would recommend this series and book for anyone looking for a cozy mystery to check out that isn’t too cute and corny (like some of the other cozy mystery series out there.) It is funny, suspenseful, and has these moments that make the characters feel really human with their faults and actions. I would suggest however, to fully enjoy the book with its continuing themes and dramas to read the first three books in the series first. You will be both surprised and humoured when the new characters come into the picture surprising your assumptions of what is to come. So, if you are looking for a fun read or one to break up your more serious reading habits this series is a fun one to undertake. Happy Reading!
