It is so easy to get paralyzed by “The Mountain.” We look at the end result, the big dream, the finished project, and we freeze because the distance between here and there feels like an ocean. The Micro-Goal Method is how we start swimming without drowning in overwhelm.

The 10-Minute Rule

If a task feels like it’s breathing down your neck, shrink it until it feels manageable. Don’t tell yourself you’re going to “clean the whole house.” That’s a mountain. Tell yourself, you’re going to spend 10 minutes clearing off the table.

How to Shrink the Mountain (The 3-Step Process)

When a goal feels too heavy to lift, use this checklist to break it down until it’s light enough to carry.

  1. Define the “Big Ask”: Write down the overwhelming task (e.g. “Clean the whole basement.”)
  2. Find the 10-Minute Slice: What is a version of this task you could do in exactly 10 minutes? Not the whole room – just one shelf or one box.
  3. Identify the “Low-Floor” First Step: What is the literal first physical movement? (e.g. “Pick up one empty box.”) If you can do the first movement, the rest of the 10-minutes usually follows.

The Dopamine of the Small Win

Our brains are wired to love a “win.” Every time you check off a micro-goal, you get a hit of dopamine. That tiny spark of success becomes the actual fuel for the next ten minutes. That is the secret to Gentle Momentum. It isn’t about high-speed chasing; it’s about the stubborn, quiet refusal to stay still.

Pick one thing today. Shrink it. Do it. Breathe. You’re moving!
