A Summary

In, “Geek Girls Don’t Cry: Real-Life Lessons From Fictional Female Characters,” Andrea Towers shows us how the female heroes we have come to love can bring us inspiration to tackle our self-care and mental health. With characters such as Dana Scully and the Scarlet Witch we find how these characters found their strength in the face of adversity and tackle life head on. With set-backs, mental illness, and self-care these characters can teach us what we can do for ourselves. They can be inspiring, motivating, and role models regardless of the fact they are fictional. By finding a way to tackle their own adversity they are symbols of strength for us. The author’s real motivation seems to be to inspire and motivate women and girls alike to be courageous in the face of their own adversities with their mental health.

Thoughts and Review

This book was an empowering read. There are so many wonderful female heroes out there that can inspire us to be more than we think we are. They can inspire us to overcome our traumas and climb over the hurdles of life. This book provided a good overview for each character mentioned while focusing on their positive attributes in the face of diversity. This may just be the perfect book you need to read right now to help you believe in yourself; in your own vision of a hero like it was for me. You are a hero. This book is so inspiring and encouraging for everyone who reads it. That superheroes are more than just characters within the comic books or movies that we take in for entertainment. If you have no one else to inspire or encourage you they can be there for you. They can be the strong faces we need to see when we are overcoming our own traumas or mental illnesses.

Recommendation

I would recommend this book to any of the fans of the characters included in this volume. Just as the characters could be more than what life gave them to work with so can we. This book would be good for any teenagers or girls facing their own traumas or mental illness but also for the women who have grown up with these characters facing similar struggles. If you are someone who is lacking support or just struggling with your mental health this book is a real life line. Within it you discover the inspiration you need to continue your own life journey with grace, power, and determination. Inside this book you also get validation that seeking out assistance or mental health support from professionals is in no way a sign or weakness. I hope every reader of this book finds something they can take with them. Happy Reading!
